India has now become the source of inspiration for international designers, especially due to the uniqueness of Indian traditional craft and fusions of handcrafted work on contemporary silhouettes.

Shivan and Narresh, well-known Indian designer duo, told fibre2fashion, “The fashion scene in India today boasts of an onset of new age designers with a newer, more designed understanding of the Indian aesthetic towards fashion.”

“Taking pride in our roots, honing and recognizing our crafts as our biggest strength and amalgamating the same to suit our more relevant lifestyles of today, is what is making us so unique on a global platform,” the duo opines.

According to the duo, amalgamation of India’s traditional crafts with current lifestyles is going to be Indian fashion industry’s biggest strength “and hence worth looking out for in the next five years,” they add.

Shivan and Naresh are the first mainstream Indian beachwear designers to create 100 percent handcrafted stitch free surfaced beach wear along with swimwear made with Italian fabrics.

Rina Dhaka, the designer best known for her theme collection, says, “Indian fashion designers are already heading towards global labels, collaborating with classic names in the world of fashion and showcasing their works across various fashion weeks in all fashion capitals of the world.”

Talking about the demand for Indian fashion in international market, she says, “India is now a source of inspiration for global designers. It is the only country where you get beautiful fusions of handcrafted work on contemporary silhouettes.”

“The fashion weeks are filled with buyers from global stores who want to stock Indian names,” she informs.

She mentions, “I have always travelled to showcase my collections because there is a demand for Indian fashion on global map.”

“I retail from east to west - from Anthropology in US to Santushti in Hong Kong. So, I feel India is not catching up anymore because it has arrived as a fashion destination already,” she opines.

Rina Dhaka is popular for her theme collections including sheer trousers, crochet, stretch jersey, woolens and spider web motifs.
