Created thanks to the support of LVMH and Christian Dior, the Pierre Bonnard exhibition has just opened its doors at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, where it will remain until May 7, 2006.
Designed around the theme 'the work of art, a stop in time', the exhibition offers a re-interpretation of Pierre Bonnard's work as an expression of "modern" notions of painting, leading to the frontiers of abstraction, through the judicious choice of some 90 paintings, along with a selection of photographs and drawings.
The exhibition is based around four recurring themes in the artist's work: the feminine nude, landscapes and terraces, interiors and still life, and self-portraiture.
The thematic, almost serialist approach does not nearly exhaust the content of these paintings, the objective of which was not "to paint life but to make painting come alive," and whose main subject "is the surface, which has its color, its laws, over and above objects," as Pierre Bonnard himself liked to explain.
Bonnard's art, a work of perception based on memory, is first and foremost a "submission to the canvas". Both for itself and for the spectator, it demands a "stop in time".
Pierre Bonnard, a marvelous colorist, preferred flat tints of fresh color to the modeled style of traditional painting, and he gradually carved out his own very personal path. To paint intimate subjects, such as interiors, nudes or windows opening onto a garden, he employed impressionist effects using light, luminous color palettes, sustaining his work with a steady sense of composition and drawing.
LVMH inherited a long history, and brings together noble professions, with deeply-rooted traditions and a unique combination of internationally renowned brands.
