Fashion design students participate in 'Cricket Bra' Competition

Mar '06
Contour Fashion Design students at Leicester's De Montfort University to create fantastic underwear that any cricketer's wife would be proud to wear.

Enthused by the history of the game and its image transformation from sleepy Sunday afternoon village entertainment into nail-biting international matches, the budding designers threw their all into the competition.

Leather shapes emulated cricket balls, shiny green materials were reminiscent of cricket pitches, cable knits copied cricket sweaters, quilting echoed shin-pads and picket fences, and prints of cigarette cards added a vintage celebrity look.

The 18 students were invited to Triumph's central London showroom to present their designs on professional models to a panel of judges that included fashion trade press editors and Triumph managers.

The judges were looking for a strong association with cricket; visual quality of make-up; fit; whether the briefs complimented the bra and the standard of each student's presentation.

First prize was awarded to 21-year-old Samantha Buckton of Barkby, Leicestershire for her shapely red, white and blue bra with hipster briefs called Bowled Over.

The judges thought Samantha's neatly executed and dramatic design fulfilled every aspect of the judging criteria.

Samantha admits to being very ambitious and adds that she wanted to design new and exciting garments that reflect the times.

Second prize-winner was 20-year-old Lucy Jackson from Oundle, Peterborough.
