Afshin Feiz talks about fashion creation, poetry & music

Fashion Designer Afshin Feiz discusses Poetry, Music, Galliano and Gaultier and How they all somehow find their way into his creations by Andrea Sercu Fashion designer Afshin Feiz was educated in economics, but his heart has always been in fashion.

He's trained with Thierry Mugler and Galliano, Christian Lacroix and Natalie Gervais at Nina Ricci, but it was his singular vision that instantly drew the praise of the press last year for his debut collection, “Art as Flirtation and Surrender.”

Inspired by everyone from the Sufi poet Rumi to the rock group Coldplay, he's been dubbed “The Poet” for his lyrical masterpieces in silk, tweed and wool. He loves to mix masculine and feminine forms: tweed with silk and trousers with feminine blouses.

And though he's steadfast in his direction, in the end, Afshin Feiz is a juxtoposition of style that somehow manages to find a perfect balance in the world of fashion.

While Afshin was gearing up for his fall/winter 2007 collection, 8 recently caught up with the designer to discuss his major influences, what he's planning for future collections and the all-important question: what's in his iPod.

When did you know you wanted to be a clothing designer? Was there a defining moment?
I was always interested in fashion and drawing. My father, a chemical engineer, pushed me into doing something more scientific, more money-oriented, but I always wanted to do something else.

First, I studiedeconomics. Then, through a process of elimination, I found myself in French literature. But, again, it wasn't what I really wanted to do.
