Dr Jessica Bugg, Director of Performance Programmes at London College of Fashion has co-curated an exhibition at this year’s Arnhem Mode Biennale which is open until 21 July.

Materiality, Meaning, Media is the first exhibition of its kind, uncovering an area of contemporary creative practice at the intersection of fashion and performance. The exhibition brings together in one space an extraordinary selection of contemporary moving image based works from artists and designers including Hussein Chalayan, BOUDICCA, Bart Hess, Lucy Orta and Maria Schuller.

By focusing on the shared understanding of clothing and the body and the similarity in methodologies in both experimental fashion and performance design an area of practice that sits between fashion and performance is uncovered.

In a climate where discipline boundaries are being re assessed and there is increased collaborative and interdisciplinary thinking, it is natural that a cross fertilisation of processes and approaches have emerged in contemporary practice.

Developments in technology and digital media have extended the cross disciplinary potential, opening up new audiences and platforms for communication, between disciplines and outside of commercial parameters.

The exhibition focuses on artists who use clothing and the wearer’s response to it as integral to the visual or embodied narrative and to the development of the performance and communication.

The exhibition provides an international perspective on this cross disciplinary phenomena and includes works by both established and emerging artists at who work with cloth and the body to communicate meaning through time based media.

Materiality, Meaning, Media is co-curated by Dr Jessica Bugg and Anna-Marie Zeiche from the London College of Fashion, UK and is the result of extended research and practice working outside of commercial imperatives usually associated with fashion.
