Changing trends and influence of media has resulted in rapid competition in the field of fashion and several emerging Hong Kong fashion designers are depending on fashion shows to attract buyers from international market.
According to young fashion designers from the region, Hong Kong Fashion Week (HKFW) is an important platform for designers as it attracts buyers from Western countries as well as from Asia-Pacific region.
In an interview with fibre2fashion, Mountain Yam, a designer known for his contemporary and sophisticated designs said, “HKFW is very important for creative designers, brands, sourcing, industry and manufacturing business to get together and develop business cooperation since it is a very convenient city connecting western countries and Asia-Pacific cities.”
Sandra Chau, an emerging designer known for high wearability and artistic elements, says, “HKFW is a fantastic platform for me, as a young designer, to showcase my collection and my design concepts because buyers and fashion people come from all over the world.”
When asked about the role of the fashion week in promoting emerging designers, Yam says, “HKFW provides a very good platform for local and emerging designers to meet buyers, people from the industry, press etc. It also helps buyers and visitors from other countries get to know about Hong Kong fashion and culture.”
“Many upcoming and potential designers are currently supported by HKFW in showcasing their collections being introduced to the buyers and international stages,” Sandra Chau says.
The 20th Hong Kong Fashion Week which ended last week, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, attracted over 17,000 buyers from 76 countries including Canada, India, Singapore Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines.
