It is said that a career in fashion is short-lived and people who were once stars are soon forgotten as others replace them, but this does not apply to some legendary people like the great Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe, who still continues to influence fashion and inspire designers even after 51 years of her final homage on August 5, 1962.

Several fashion brands or designers even today continue to draw inspiration from the star, and the latest example is of the US fashion retail brand Macy’s, which recently unveiled its Marilyn Monroe collection, a clothing line that primarily meant to teenagers and young women from 13 to 22.

India’s celebrated fashion designer Ritu Beri also drew inspiration from Ms. Monroe for her Lakme Fashion Week Winter/ Festive 2012 collection. The designer tried to appeal to the youth through the verve and sex appeal typical to that of Marilyn with her collection featuring soft cream colours contrasted with bright hues of pink, turquoise and blue.

Commemorating its 30th anniversary last year, US-based apparel and accessories brand Guess re-issued the Marilyn jeans. The 3-zip ‘Marilyn’ jean replicates the original GUESS jean from 1982. The high-waste slim-fit ankle length jeans were highly in demand and earned much popularity to the brand during 1980s.

Back in 2011 too, the same brand also drew inspiration from the legendary actress for its Fall/Winter collection 2011. The collection featured pieces like straight-legged, flared and cropped denim jeans and feminine tops like the ones donned by Ms. Monroe.

The apparel and accessories brand Pinup Girl Clothing has also unveiled a swimsuit line inspired and named after Ms. Monroe.

In 2012 a UK-based latex manufacturer Anatomic Bomb created a range of latex interpretations of some of the most famous apparels donned by Ms. Monroe, to honour the 50th anniversary of Ms. Monroe’s death. The collection titled ‘Marilyn Monroe Latex Collection’ included dresses, bathing suit, a uniform, showgirl costumes and separates.

Clearly, the legendary actress continues to inspire apparel and accessories brands and designers even to this day, and more collections would follow in future.
