Maita Marimo to partake at Nolcha Fashion Week New York

Designer Maita Marimo shares: “New York City is the fashion hub of the world. I’m honored and excited to be showcasing my collection at Nolcha Fashion Week. It is a unique platform that allows designers, like myself, to showcase my creativity on an international platform."

Maita, from Mazowe, Zimbabwe, had the intention of pursuing a career as an interior designer however her sister encouraged her to enter into a local fashion designing competition. Without any expectations, she managed to win the first prize.

In 2008 Maita studied for a Bachelor of Arts degree at the School of The Art Institute of Chicago, but was eager to return to Zimbabwe to set up her fashion studio.

In 2010 the first Maita Marimo ready to wear collection launched at the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe supported by the Spanish embassy. In 2011 Maita was invited by Africa Fashion International to showcase at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa. She returned the following year to showcase again and Maita Marimo was voted Zimbabwe’s Fashion Week Designer of the year.

The vision for this collection derives from the central themes of femininity and glamour. Maita identifies as an African Shona and sometimes fuses a hint of her cultural heritage in her designs to create a unique yet modern and edgy style.

Her vision is to create unforgettable pieces that one can cherish for years to come and eventually pass on to the next generation. Maita says she never wishes to follow trends, but to establish them with clothing that makes people feel confident, sensual, yet chic and stylish.

Maita comments: “I am a self-taught designer. There are not a lot of mentors in my country within the fashion industry. I have had to learn a lot of things about the fashion industry by myself through research and practical work.

"I have made mistakes and I have learnt from them. I believe the best teacher is experience. I felt the best place for me to be was New York. New York City is a place where the fashion world meets. When I think of New York City I think of the possibilities of attaining the American dream.”
