David Bowie is best-dressed Briton of all times

David Bowie, the 1980s rock legend known for his quirky fashion choices, has been crowned as the best-dressed Briton of all times in a recent poll conducted by Britain’s bestselling magazine BBC History Magazine.

Nominated by designer Wayne Hemingway, the widely celebrated English singer-songwriter and style icon won with around 48.5 per cent of votes cast in his favour by the British public.

The 66-year-old musician is followed by the likes of Queen Elizabeth I and the Duchess of Devonshire-Georgiana Cavendish, who have secured second and third positions respectively in the list.

Chosen by an acclaimed panel of historians, fashion experts and curators, the list places George ‘Beau’ Brummell and Queen Alexandra at fourth and fifth positions.

Additionally, the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th places are occupied by famous historical personalities like Anne Messel, Henry III, Ellen Terry, Charles James Fox and Samuel Pepys.

Known for his attention grabbing queer stage costumes, David Bowie once again grabbed the spotlight by becoming the subject of a retrospective exhibit, organized by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).

Considered as V&A’s fastest selling exhibition till date, the international touring exhibition titled as ‘David Bowie Is’ displayed more than 300 items, such as original stage attires, handwritten lyrics, album artwork, set designs and performance materials, belonging to the living legend.

The expansive showcase of exhibits included the Freddie Burretti-designed attires from the Ziggy Stardust tour (1972), Kansai Yamamoto created outfits from the Aladdin Sane tour (1973) and the popular Bowie and Alexander McQueen’s collaborative Union Jack coat for the Earthling magazine’s cover (1997).

Presently, ‘David Bowie Is’ exhibit is going on at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, where it would stay till November 27, 2013.
