The Museum of Costume in the Spanish capital city of Madrid has opened a new exhibition dedicated to the work of renowned self-taught 1970’s Spanish fashion designer Manuel Pina.

Titled ‘Manuel Pina: Fashion Designer 1944-1994', the exhibition explores the career of the Spanish fashion genius who forayed into the fashion world during the 1970s through his knitted garments which served the market needs during the time.

The exhibition, curated by Concha Herranz and Juan Gutierrez, features exclusive pieces and sketches from the renowned fashion designer’s catwalk collections during the early 1980s, a time when the Spanish ready-to-wear industry was beginning to take shape.

The Spanish fashion designer is known famously for his spectacular collection which he presented under the circus dome of Ciudad de los Muchachos, just days before the 1982 Spanish general elections.

The exhibition provides an insight into the designer’s creations that merged tradition, handicrafts and avant-garde design which mesmerized women who were yearning for modernity. Women wearing his impeccable creations were classified as ‘Pina Women’ who became the leaders of the cultural movement ‘Movida Madrilena’ which defined the oncoming of braver and newer times in Spanish fashion history.

Organized by the Promotion of Fine Arts and the Museum of Costume in collaboration with the Museum of Manuel Pina in the city of Manzares, the exhibition is scheduled to run till January 26, 2013.
