Japanese designers make headway in global fashion

In this era of cut-throat competition in international fashion, Japanese labels, with their highly-innovative and practical design approach, are steadily finding a firm foothold in almost all fashion arenas in the global society.

An instance of the growing importance of Japanese designers was seen at a recent London’s Victoria and Albert Museum exhibit, which had made the 69-year-old Japanese design veteran Kansai Yamamoto as the subject of its latest Fashion in Motion touring display.

The event highlighted some archived and specially made pieces, such as the stage costumes from the widely celebrated English singer-songwriter David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane tour in 1973, hand-picked from the designer’s four decade-long career.

Other than touring exhibits, paying homage to well-established names, the young generation of Japanese designers, mostly between the ages of 30 and 40 years, who are currently helming famous labels like sacai, Toga and Issey Miyake, have also managed to secure their own places at high-profile events like the Paris Fashion Week.

Apart from the western side of the globe, the eastern fashion world has also started taking interest in Japanese fashion. Recently at Singapore’s Fide Fashion Week, which showcased collections from nearly 30 European and Asian designers, the Japanese couturier Yumi Katsura’s catwalk show was largely appreciated.

The fashion talent drew inspiration from classic Japanese designs for her latest runway looks. With proper attention given to the detailing on each of the line’s outfits, the designer featured elegant black ball dresses, kimonos for both men and women, over the top headgears, Kimono-style wedding gowns and a white dress with a long Singapore Merlion embedded train.
