Ossie Clark, a prominent fashion designer in the Swinging Sixties London, will be celebrated once again through a forthcoming exhibit at Manchester Art Gallery.
Titled ‘Ossie Clark, a British fashion genius, 1967-1977’, the retrospective display will feature some 25 extraordinary creations designed by the late designer during the peak of his creative journey.
Curated by the gallery senior curator Dr. Miles Lambert, the exhibit will include a striking black, ivory and mauve hued rayon mini-dress, created in collaboration with the English fashion expert’s textile designer wife Celia Birtwell.
Another major attraction of the display, which is set to take place from January 30 to June 29, 2014, will be a collection of around seven flouncy moss crepe evening dresses decorated with pretty florals.
Renowned for his fluid lines and unsurpassed cuts, Clark was one of the most influential of British designers of the later 1960s and 1970s.
Born in Warrington, Ossie Clark (1942-96) studied fashion at London’s Royal College of Art during 1962-64, after which he joined the design team at the Quorum boutique in London’s Chelsea. He quickly achieved national recognition after his work appeared in British Vogue in 1965.
His use of transparent chiffons and clingy crêpes produced unique, ultra-feminine designs for the “Swinging London” of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Ossie Clark can now be recognized as one of the most important British designers of the later 20th century, a favourite of personalities like Marianne Faithfull, David Hockney, and Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones, as well as of countless less celebrated clients.
