Maine's Saco Museum to exhibit New England fashions

An exhibit featuring fashions worn by the 18th to 20th century inhabitants from the northern New England region in the United States will soon open at Saco Museum, Maine.

Titled as ‘From The Elegant To The Everyday: 200 Years of Fashion in Northern New England’, the display aims to highlight the American colonists’ love for quality fashion clothing in that era.

The exhibit will explore how people from smaller cities like Saco and Biddeford as well as larger urban areas such as Boston used to look up to England as the source for latest styles, fabrics and accessories.

Slated to take place from March 15 through May 3, 2014, the display will not only feature an impressive showcase of high dressing, donned by the elites of that period, but also regular everyday clothing pieces.

Sourced from the collections of Saco Museum and other local institutions in Maine and New Hampshire, the exhibits will include 18th-century cloaks, exquisite gowns from the 19th century and some 20th century men’s suits and military uniforms.

Residents of northern New England were eager to purchase quality goods so that they too could “cut a fine figure”. The desire to keep up with current fashions changed little over the next century and a half, although people began to look to places other than England for the latest styles and fabrics.

The mechanization of the textile industry, the invention of the sewing machine in the 1850s, and the availability of ready-to-wear clothing by the early 20th century made it easier and more affordable for people of all classes to dress well. Clothing styles changed, but people continued to strive to look their best.
