Fashion designers with strong Chinese roots have managed to grab the spotlight during the US First Lady Michelle Obama’s latest trip to China.

On her recent mainland tour, the better half of the current US president Barack Obama was seen in exquisite dresses created by not one but two extremely talented designers from the Chinese descent.

The sophisticated lady opted for a geometrical patterned black, tan and white leather and suede patchwork detailed woollen dress, selected from the California-born Chinese-American designer Derek Lam’s fall 2013 collection, for her meeting with China’s First Lady Peng Liyuan.

Later on her visit to a Beijing school, Mrs. Obama chose to sport a white button-down shirt and black pants combo paired with a matching vest, created by the Los Angeles based designer of Chinese origin Phillip Lim.

After donning two outfits from the Chinese designers, the First Lady once again surprised everyone with her final dress choice in red, a colour that stands for happiness and good fortune in China, for her meeting with President Xi Jinping. Designed by the Indian-born, American fashion designer Naeem Khan, the scarlet hued, three-quarter-sleeve lace dress featured floral patterns.
