Even as many Indians celebrated the emergence of Narendra Modi as the next Prime Minister of India, the world of fashion design also did not stay behind in joining and cashing in the Modi fever.

Followed by the May 16, 2014’s results, which gave Modi’s political party—the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP or Indian People’s Party) a clear mandate, several fashion designers, retailers and e-commerce sites have engaged in the task of creating clothing and fashion accessory lines inspired from the crisp dressing style of the leader.

Designer couple and Lakme Fashion Week regulars, Kapil and Mmonika Arora have unveiled an apparel collection with the tagline ‘Old Classic but new vision, New India,’ dedicated to the 63-year-old political leader. Made from cotton, the range features orange, rust, white, off-white and coffee brown coloured kurta and churidaar sets as well as bright Nehru jackets.

Another designer duo, based in Kolkata, Mona Lamba and Pali Sachdev, has created a line featuring motifs of the politician’s iconic party logo lotus, for Modi supporters where as a popular website named Modimania.com has come up with an exclusive range of Modi Cut Kurta and T-shirts.

Not to be left behind, small-scale entrepreneurs, like the Ahmedabad-based tailor Bipin Chauhan--the man who claims to have stitched clothing for Modi in the past, have started producing Modi kurtas this year.

A popular saree shop in Mumbai called Paaneri has unveiled a georgette saree collection decorated with digitally printed images of the statesman, known for his effortless sartorial elegance.

With his crisp, half-sleeved raw silk, khadi and linen crafted kurtas and churidar pyjamas, teamed up with impeccably-tailored and vibrantly hued Nehru jackets, Narendra Modi is soon emerging as a fashion icon in his own unique way.
