Indian ethnic wear mixed with a hint of western styles ruled the runways of the just concluded instalment of Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/ Festive 2014.

Bollywood celebrity favoured designer Vikram Phadnis staged a grand catwalk show with his gold zardosi and gota work heavy pieces. Based on an earthy subdued palette of nude, gold, silver, off-white, deep maroon, lush green, wild blue and spicy mustard shades, the diaphanous fabric crafted pieces were created with a harmonious blend of both western and Indian silhouettes.

The range included a sequined long kurta paired with gold embellished and embroidered palazzos, a dual toned velveteen jacket worn over a tie and dye lehenga, and a front zipped jacket teamed with an ombré shaded saree.

Bollywood actresses Dia Mirza and Bipasha Basu walked as showstoppers for the designer. Mirza strutted down the ramp in a gold embroidered velvet jacket worn over a short nude kurta, a net lehenga and mustard dupatta. Basu looked stunning in an oxblood lehenga paired with a two-toned dupatta and a gold embroidered 18 kali skirt.

Indian designer Anita Dongre drew inspiration from the grand architecture of the Mughal era for her India Modern bridal collection. Aimed at the 21st century brides, the line was replete with subtle detailing and layering. Based on jewel tones of ruby red, peacock blue and regal pink, the modern bridal ensembles were embellished with gotta patti, dori and hand embroidery.

The collection included jumpsuits, shirt kurtas, ornate pants, cropped jackets, long tulip skirts, crinkled skirts, gold cholis and colourfully panelled lehengas with interesting hemlines. The line’s menswear entry was black and white textured sherwanis, quilted Jodhpur jackets, salwars and dhotis.

Designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil took inspiration from the scenic beauty of the Himalayas for their 39-piece couture range. Enhanced with fabric cut-outs, the collection was made using luxurious fabrics like chiffon, georgette, tulle and organza.

Based on a dramatic colour story ranging from grey, white and deep red to blue and black, the line featured lehengas, Anarkalis, tone-on-tone draped saree-gowns and structured cocktail gowns. The most standout ensembles were a tiered tulle gown with antique gold work, a navy sheath and a bronze beaded asymmetric jacket paired with a ruffled ecru skirt. The line’s menswear pieces included rounded sherwanis, bundgalas, bundies and side draped kurtas.
