New Zealand Fashion Week kicks off with Rock chic looks

Dazzling arrays of autumn–winter 2015 creations, designed by a mix of both seasoned and young talents, graced the runway on the first day of New Zealand Fashion Week.

Local label NOM*d preferred to showcase a typical Rock chic-inspired line based on a dark palette for its latest catwalk presentation named Noise. Paired with cut-out felt helmet-like hats, the collection featured floor-length kilts, bomber jackets, gauzy knitwear, printed T-shirts, sleeveless vests, coats and pinafores.

Mary-Ellen Prendergast, the Auckland-based designer behind the Shen label, drew inspiration from the concrete urban jungles and luxe sportswear for her new designs, which included olive green camouflage print bomber jackets, khaki jacquard sheaths, draped and tucked sheer dresses, as well as bell-sleeved kimonos.

Lela Jacobs chose a sombre palette of black, white, cream and mocha colours for her androgynous creations. Made using diaphanous fabrics like silk and voile, the standout pieces were draped harem-pants, chunky open weave knits, lamb wool capes and dresses.

Marc Moore, Dan Gosling and Luke Harwood, the design trio for Stolen Girlfriends Club brand, mixed the style ethos of 1970s and 1990s into its collection. Created in tones of mustards, duck-egg blue, black and grey blended with a dash of glittering metallic, the featured men’s and women’s ensembles included leather jackets, knitted bell-bottom trousers, turtleneck shirts, skater skirts and shimmering pants.

The part exhibition and part live installation style catwalk layout Underground, staged by Blue Blank, Jason Lingard, Jimmy D, Jojo Ross and Thprks brands, showcased beautiful white dresses and an array of slogan emblazoned creations.
