Standing on the last leg of 2014, fibre2fashion recapitulates some of the big fashion moments that not only grabbed the fashion media’s spotlight from every nook and corner of the globe but also managed to change the way fashion is perceived normally.

One such moment came from the American television and film actress Olivia Wilde, who redefined the loose-fitting, dowdy styles of a traditional maternitywear with her amazing choice of a shimmering green floor-length Gucci gown at the Golden Globes red-carpet event this year.

Another convention-defying moment came through the fast becoming popular plus-size industry which off-late is seeing big names creating clothes for brands catering exclusively to curvy women. One such recent collaboration took place between the New York-based designer of Cuban-American descent, Isabel Toledo, and the American plus-size women’s fashion chain Lane Bryant.

The two fashion creators jointly launched a limited-edition watercolour floral print adorned line for sizes ranging from 14 to 28. In addition to the collaborative venture with 53-year-old Toledo, the retailer has lately roped another regular size fashion maker, Lela Rose, to design an eveningwear and daywear plus-size collection which will be available in-stores sometime during the Summer-2015 season.

Apart from the attention grabbing sartorial creations from well known designers, the most remarkable moment of the year came from the enfant terrible of fashion, Jean Paul Gaultier, who decided to quit his prêt-a-porter design career after an extremely successful stint of over four decades. The couturier presented his final ready-to-wear collection at the Paris Fashion Week’s September, 2014 calendar before bidding adieu to the world of ready-to-wear.

The year 2014 also saw the demise of a very influential and exceptionally talented industry name, Oscar de la Renta, the Dominican American couturier who had dressed some of the biggest international personalities like Jacqueline Kennedy and American actress Sarah Jessica Parker in his prolific several-year-long fashion design career. Known for his exquisite red carpet and couture collections, the design veteran was awarded with some of the biggest accolades, including two Council of Fashion Designers Designer of the Year Award (2007 and 2008) and the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award (1990).
