Some 60 iconic womenswear creations spanning decades, right from 1920s through the early 2000s, are currently on display at Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana.

Titled Cutting-Edge Fashion: Recent Acquisitions, the exhibition features pieces from an impressive list of European, American and Japanese designers who have succeeded in challenging and re-defining the traditional norms of style in the industry.

Giving an up and close view of the museum’s latest fashion acquisitions, the exhibit features evening gowns, sportswear, bathing suits and accessories from names like Rudi Gernreich, Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake and Franco Moschino.

The major highlights include a 1991 sequined five-piece pantsuit by an Indiana native who is considered as one of the pioneers of streetwear fashions in America, Stephen Sprouse, a 1920s evening dress featuring a mermaid silhouette with train and an exaggerated fishtail from Callot Soeurs, as well as an attention grabbing 1982 boob-tube sweater by Vivienne Westwood.

Due to run through January 3, 2016, the exhibition is curated by the museum’s textile and fashion arts curator, Niloo Paydar.

In concurrence with the exhibit, a talk by University of Notre Dame professor and author of The Lost Art of Dress, Linda Przybyszewski will be hosted on August 27, 2015. Also a runway show featuring creations by emerging and well-known local and national fashion designers will be held on Oct 2, 2015. (PB)
