Following the first round of judging, the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) has announced the names of the finalists in its 2006 Colour in Design Competition fashion/textile category sponsored by Marks and Spencer.
Open to both undergraduates and postgraduates, the competition saw an astounding level of interest this year with almost 400 entries from 50 colleges in 10 different countries from as far afield as Australia, Canada, Croatia, Denmark and New Zealand.
By far the largest numbers of entries were received for the undergraduate competition, which meant the judges had an even harder task than usual to select only six finalists from the hundreds of designs submitted.
The brief was unrestrictive, stating simply the students must produce work, which illustrated a creative, imaginative and original use of colour to produce a truly distinctive piece of work.
With titles ranging from 'English tea party' to 'Degas dancing ballerinas,' the finalists in the undergraduate fashion/textile category are:
Lucy Brennan (University College Falmouth, UK).
Emily Cornick (Winchester School of Art, UK).
David Lothian (Chelsea College of Art & Design, UK).
Victoria Stone (London College of Fashion, UK).
Louise Townsend (Chelsea College of Art & Design, UK).
Amy Van Luijk (Massey University, New Zealand).
In the postgraduate competition, two finalists were selected:
Bernadette McCabe (Nottingham Trent University, UK).
Alice Palmer (Royal College of Art, UK).
The winners will be announced at a glittering awards dinner, sponsored by VeriVide, on 13 October 2006 following the Society's Colour Conference in Belfast.
Further information about the awards dinner and the conference can be found at www.sdc.org.uk/colourconf.htm.
