EC to verify Polish shoemakers claim of Chinese threat

Leather footwear industry of Poland feels threatened by the Chinese invasion of cheap products, and two leading Polish companies will be inspected by the European Commission (EC) for the threat percieved by them.

Two Polish shoe makers Wojas and Arcobaleno, selected from among 26 domestic producers who lodged a petition with the EC in May on behalf of EU shoe producers, will soon be visited by inspectors from the European Committee.

The EC is expected to pass its judgement on the issue in September, it is learnt.

The 100 million pair shoe market of Poland consists of 45 million pairs produced by domestic producers that include 16.7 million pairs made from leather.

Sales of leather shoes have reached PLN 1.35 billion and is an area of concern for Polish footwear makers due to continual drop.

Estimated figures given be Polish Chamber of Commerce (KIG) place record decline in sales due to couple of factors, including imports from China, down from PLN 2.97bn (€719m) to PLN 1.76bn (€426m) during the 2001-2004 period.
