Bon-Ton Inc July sales down 2.6% to $73.2bn

A leading quality fashion department store The Bon-Ton Stores Inc announced the total sales for the four weeks ended July 30, 2005 decreased 2.6 percent to $73.2 million compared to $75.2 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales decreased 2.0 percent.

For the second quarter of fiscal 2005, total sales decreased 3.5 percent to $ 274.3 million compared to $284.2 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales decreased 3.0 percent.

Year-to-date total sales decreased 2.3 percent to $536.9 million compared to $549.3 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales decreased 1.8 percent.

James H. Baireuther, Vice Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer, commented, "Although the sales of apparel continued to improve, July sales, in aggregate, were disappointing. Home remains the weakest category. Product categories which performed well were ladies' apparel, including special sizes, men's, fashion accessories, shoes and boy's and girl's. Customer response to their early fall deliveries has been favorable."

"As they continue to transition into fall with fresh, new assortments, they are focused on the timely liquidation of spring and summer goods."

Mr. Baireuther continued, "While their sales performance in the second quarter was below expectations, they are reaffirming their earnings guidance for fiscal 2005 of $1.70 to $1.85 per share."

Pennsylvania based The Bon-Ton Stores Inc engages to operate 139 department stores and two furniture stores in 16 states from the Northeast to the Midwest under the Bon-Ton and Elder-Beerman names.

The stores offer quality branded opening, moderate and better priced merchandise in apparel, cosmetics, shoes, accessories and distinctive home fashions, as well as exclusive private-label merchandise. The Bon-Ton carves out and maintains a niche in smaller markets, attracting customers seeking fashion-right merchandise at competitive prices.
