For the third consecutive year, IU Bloomington students from the Department of Apparel Merchandising & Interior Design's Retail Studies Group were honored in New York at the YMA Scholarship Fund's Geoffrey Beene Scholarship Dinner.

The IU honorees were among 91 students from universities nationwide receiving $5,000 scholarships at the Jan. 9 event. The IU students are: Christina Bires, Callie Blyze, Kelsea Foist, Katelyn Rodgers, Erica Satterthwaite and Jessica Sheehan.

Professor Kate Rowold, Ph.D., director of the department's Retail Studies and Fashion Design Culture academic groups, and Eloise Paul, a senior lecturer from the Retail Studies Group faculty, accompanied the students to the awards ceremony at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel.

"This is among the nation's most competitive and prestigious scholarship programs for university students majoring in fashion-related fields. Each year, YMA grants awards to students from schools nationwide deemed to have the potential to work and succeed in the apparel business," says Paul.

Rowold added that the YMA scholarship competition helps identify innovative and creative young professionals.

"Top-level industry executives at the dinner commented on how the YMA scholarship program was a key mechanism for identifying the next generation of retail and fashion leaders. Through YMA's mentoring initiatives, students can build their creativity, business and fashion design skills," she said.

The YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund is a non-profit organization that supports future fashion industry leaders through scholarships, mentoring and internship programs. Since its inception, it has provided financial assistance to more than 600 college students pursuing fashion industry careers. This year's Geoffrey Beene Scholarship Dinner raised more than $1.3 million, making it the most successful dinner to date.
