Northern tier stores perform better at Stein Mart

Stein Mart Inc reported total sales and comparable store sales for the fiscal period ended March 1, 2008.

During February, special sizes (including women's and petite's) had positive comparable store sales. Ladies' career, ladies' casual and intimate apparel were better than the Company trend, although still negative.

Geographically, comparable stores sales trends were negative in all regions of the country, with Northern tier stores performing somewhat better than those in the South and West.

At March 1, 2008, there were 279 stores in operation as compared to 269 at the same time last year.

Full financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2007 will be reported before the U.S. financial markets open on Thursday, March 20, 2008.

Management will also hold a conference call at 10 a.m. ET that morning to discuss those results and Company strategy for 2008.

The call may be heard on the investor relations portion of the Company's website. A replay of the presentation will be available on the website until March 29, 2008.

Due to the current volatile retailing environment, management has decided to discontinue its practice of providing sales and earnings guidance for future periods.

The Company will continue to report total and comparable stores sales monthly, and will issue complete financial results quarterly.
