Dubal offers an elegant but stylish line

Mar '08
A Sonam Dubal show has always been not only a fashion experience but a spiritually uplifting one. For Autumn/Winter 2008, Sonam presented at Lakme Fashion Week his quietly elegant, yet dramatic collection titled Trailing the River Goddess, inspired by the life giving rivers – Mekong, Brahamaputra and Nile.

Weaving in the beauty of the rivers, Sonam's colour palette flowed with turquoise blue, crimson, forest green, earthy tones, with touches of yellow and orange and hints of gold silk and organza, for graceful mid length jackets, sensuous wraps, along with his trade mark wrap dresses with the most beautiful tonal embroidery and vibrant tribal prints.

The silhouettes were uncluttered and clean with restrained layering that reflected the mood of the oriental inspiration with mandarin collars and lean shapes for jackets, diagonal cut midis and skirts.

Accessories played an important role as soft fabric striped Obi belts, flat velvet shoes, cummerbunds, as well as macramé and knots were artistically turned into neckpieces. The embellishments with African and Indian motifs subtly highlighted the garments.

Some of the striking ensembles that glided down the ramp were a black quilted jacket worn with a blue raw silk bakhu sarong skirt, the fluid crepe hand painted dress with red/blue embroidered coat, the stunning burgundy Chanderi embroidered kurta and brown crushed skirt, burgundy gold embroidered sleeves jacket with a bakhu skirt, a hand painted striped cape and finally a gorgeous reversible open coat with high slits.

Except for the heavily sequined scarves and pants, the embroidery was subtle at times twinkling delicately in the light.

Having complete control over his theme and creativity, Sonam Dubal's eclectic collection was an ode to not only ethereal fashion but style and ultimate elegance.
