US Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA), had recently visited Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam, to promote leather for export purpose in domestic market.
This is for the first time that, USHSLA had sent a delegation to Vietnam, as the export to the country has witnessed a sharp growth of 300 to 400 percent within a short span of two years.
According to available statistic, US leather exports turnover to Vietnam reaped nearly US $11.6 million in 2005 and rose to almost $57.8 million last year.
During 2007, the country imported nearly $1 billion worth of leather, in which US had a share of mere 10 percent, the country now wants to increase its share as there is great demand in Vietnamese market.
So far, Vietnam footwear industry has been heavily relying on import of leather and countries like Korea, Brazil and China fulfill more than 80 percent of total demand.
