Footwear industry to post export turnover of $6.2 bn in 2010

This paper provides the main points of the master plan on the development of Vietnam's leather and footwear by 2010:
Overarching objectives:
The leather and footwear industry shall be developed into a crucial industry in service of domestic use and exports, helping generate more jobs and foreign exchange for the country.
Leather and footwear enterprises shall be able to grow in a sustainable manner by means of advanced technologies and the ISO 9000 quality management system and the ISO 14000 environmental management system.
Product development planning:
All economic sectors shall be encouraged to get involved in the investment in producing raw materials and accessories for the leather and footwear industry.
Priority will be given to the development of leather tanneries that own advanced technologies and modern equipment.
Additionally, existing establishments will be restructured and modernized to raise production and quality of tanned leather and to make the best use of domestic leather raw materials.
The development of the leather processing industry will be combined with the incentive to expand industrial-scale animal husbandry and concentrated slaughtering, so as to further enhance raw leather quality and output.
The leather industry will be in collaboration with the textile, plastics and mechanical industries in stepping up raw materials and accessories in response to the industry's needs.
Every economic sector will be encouraged to take part in the investment in manufacturing footwear and leather goods for domestic use and exports.
Centralized industrial parks are to be built and qualified in respect of infrastructure and environmental treatment, with a view to drawing Vietnamese and foreign investors.
