A large number of enterprises in Guangdong have started moving out of the region since last year. Already, some 1,000 footwear manufacturing enterprises in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region have either closed down or have relocated in other places.

Presently, the PRD region has about 2,428 footwear export enterprises, of which nearly half of the companies gave no export performance this year.

Recent data collected, shows that deficit of loss-making enterprises has increased in the first five months of this year while the number of loss-making firms has reached to 11,006, a rise of 12.7 percent. Loss expanded to 20.796 billion yuan, an increase of 49.3 percent.

Customs statistics revealed that in the period between January and May this year, Guangdong exported 1.35 billion pairs of shoes marking a decline of 15.5 percent over the corresponding period last year. It earned revenues amounting to US $3.97 billion, an increase of 9.4 percent.

As one of the most intensive footwear production area in Guangdong, the Pearl River Delta region exported some 940 million pairs of shoes of all kinds, representing a considerable drop of 25.7 percent.
