First Lady Laura Bush, Cindy McCain, Michelle Obama, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, and Senators Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton all have something in common: Pearls are the fashion accessory of choice for prominent females in politics.

At the Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama was seen wearing South Sea pearls, while at the Republican Convention, Mrs. Bush sported pearl stud earrings, Governor Palin took to the podium wearing golden South Sea pearls, and Mrs. McCain modeled a four-stranded pearl necklace that appeared to be composed of large akoya pearls.

The world's largest online pearl company, PearlParadise.com, has seen sales increase over the past few months as the Presidential Election takes center stage in the media.

Kirsten Wolff, executive vice president at PearlParadise.com explains, "Young women are now paying attention to the world of politics as they aspire to project a balance of both power and beauty.

In fact, we are getting a large number of requests from customers for strands of pearls similar to those worn by these female political icons. A strand of pearls is now as common as a politician's tie."

Pearls have a timeless appeal, representing class and elegance, and now more than ever are seen as a symbol of power for women in business and politics.

Young women who are just starting their careers and don't necessarily have much discretionary income, are emulating these successful women by purchasing freshwater pearls at reasonable prices.
