ABIT joins the Brazil Fashion System

The Brazil Fashion System (SMB), an articulation instrument between the government and fashion-related production chains like textiles, jewelry, leather and footwear, was officially launched on June 22, during São Paulo Fashion Week.

ABIT joins SMB together with other private initiative representatives, such as the National Service for Industrial Apprenticeship (Senai), National Service for Commercial Education (Senac), Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support (Sebrae), Brazilian Association of Fashion Designers (ABEST), Brazilian Man-Made Fiber Producers Association (ABRAFAS), Brazilian Footwear Industries Association (Abicalçados), Brazilian Association of Shoe and Leather Components Industries (Assintecal), Brazilian Tanning Industries Association (CICB), Fashion Institute (Inmod) and Brazilian Institute of Gems and Precious Metals (IBGM).

The federal government is represented in the project by the Ministries of Development, Industry and Commerce (MDIC), Culture, Science and Technology and Foreign Relations, as well as the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI), Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) and National Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES).

The SMB is coordinated by the Secretary, and its objectives include developing projects that benefit the fashion industry, sharing and integrating information and experience, seeking joints solutions to common problems, stimulating cooperativism and associativism and developing competitive intelligence.

“The project represents the synergy between the entities in relation to fashion strategies and image in Brazil and abroad,” affirms ABIT board member, Rafael Cervone. ABEST president, Amir Slama, underscores SMB's importance.

“Now, we are all going to speak the same language and defend the same interests.” According to Armando Meziat, MDIC's Secretary of Production Development, this will be a space for interlocution between the parties.

“The creation and operation of SMB will permit dialogue between the industries tied to fashion and us,” pointed out Meziat.

In practice, the SMB will function as a means to forward the sector's demands, so they do not get lost in government bureaucracy. “The group will hold periodic meetings to develop plans and goals,” adds Cervone.

Founded as the Fashion Committee on November 5 of last year by Minister Miguel Jorge, the SMB is one of the priorities for the Production Development Policy's (PDP) textile and apparel segment, launched by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on May 12, 2008.

The system is all part of the Forum on Competitiveness, created in 2000 and coordinated by the MDIC's Secretary of Production Development through the Department of Labor and Natural Resource Intensive Industries.
