Women Cruise Collection for 2011 by House of Gucci

Stylish travel has always inspired the House of Gucci since it was founded in 1921, and so this theme is further explored in its latest Cruise Collection for 2011. With an elegant voyage very much in mind, Creative Director Frida Giannini interprets the contemporary female wardrobe with faultless nonchalance, alternating between an edgy chic urban attitude and an ultra glamorous spirit.

In her choice of fabrics, Giannini keeps the mood light and subtle, with natural and classic materials, ranging from linen, cotton and washed silk, to new, delicate leather with remarkable ultra fine consistencies. With ease of travel essential, surfaces offer a newer soft, fluid touch, underscoring the juxtaposition of lightness and energy that is the essence of this collection.

Just as the mood combines a tougher urban style with racy glamour, so the colour palette features two complementary directions. An urban sense runs through light hues and more vivid, intense colours based on opaque earthy tones, floral vibrations and military green. While dyed, iconic graphics and elaborate animalier prints, including the trompe l'oeil draped zebra, capture the sense of allure for which Gucci has always been known.

The urban edge is apparent in new silhouettes that accentuate military rigour, mixed with dashes of sophisticated Seventies romanticism. The structure throughout is soft, yet still precise and pure. Emphasizing sartorial minimalism, the silhouette sculpts the body's curves with flowing volumes and body-skimming lines.

Giannini also opts for clean-cut and fitted shapes in outfits, where college uniforms meet a military mood - waistlines are low and hip-hugging, jackets are cropped and feature shoulder pads. Trousers come with iconic sporty details including the classic web tape and elastic bands, while looser fitting models have double belts or closures with bamboo buckles at the ankle.

Trench coats are slim-fitting, blazers resemble wrap-around cardigans, though with super feminine knitted inserts, and over-size parka jackets are replaced by short, biker-style jackets with macro lapels and pocket appliqués. In addition to dresses and blouses cut with an anatomical silhouette, overalls come in “parachute” printed silk with a Memphis Belle air squadron attitude.

Ribbons, micro buttons and leather inserts are recurring details along with crystal and sequin embroideries applied on iridescent, liquid-effect, cocktail dress textures. The new evening tuxedo in faille makes a statement, as does the unexpected use of leopard and camouflage print, trimmed with transparencies, metallic or silver hues and faceted sequins.

In summary, a modernist travel statement, with easy sophistication as its leitmotif.
