Local designers from Manipur are gearing up to take their place in global fashion designing as they take a trip to Italy and Germany with their designs, in the end part of the year.

Manipur Development Society, a state government undertaking, and the Indian Chamber of Commerce jointly undertook the Manipur Handloom Export Development Project, launched to carry the state's local designs to global markets. The project has been sponsored by the State Planning Board.

A group of the Manipur Development Society and Indian Chamber of Commerce's members is to visit Milan during September 9 to 12. Chief Secretary D.S. Poonia, said that, they are taking along the designs and the designers as they intend to explore the market there.

Subsequent to Milan, next they would be visiting Frankfurt in December. The project has been started to export the state's handloom designs and to open up new markets, and that they are positive that they would succeed in their efforts, Poonia said.

The designers prior to showcasing their designs at the Milan ramp, have displayed the same at another event in the state. Of total 20 applicants, nine designers were picked to display their designs at the show, presenting a mutiny of colours and a collection of natural fabrics.

Memyo Ningomba, a designer said that, the clothes they display are produced from silk and are environment friendly as the dyes used in them are natural and not chemical dyes. He also added that, if they get help, they could explore markets abroad.
