Under Swaranjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) Scheme launched by Ministry of Rural Development, National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) proposes to impart training to local artisans.

Part of Cluster Development Initiative, this scheme intends to raise a number of micro-enterprises in rural India by utilizing talent of rural craftsmen.

Design Studio at NIFT Centre, Rural Development Enterprise Centre (RDEC) at Clusters and Shared Resources and Technology Support Centre (SRTSC) at sub-cluster level will exploit the potential of local artisans; thereby a three-level holistic intervention is carried out, sources of Textile Ministry.

This scheme offers a complete programme taking all aspects of self-employment like organisation of the poor into Self-Help Groups (SHGs), training, credit, technology, infrastructure and marketing.

Birbhum and Kolkata in West Bengal, Surendranagar and Gandhinagar in Gujarat, Kozhikode in Kerala, Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Hampi and Bangalore in Karnataka, Dhar in Madhya Pradesh and in New Delhi are five craft clusters identified by NIFT to operationalise the project.
