Dar Fashion event to empower Tanzanian women entrepreneurs

May '11
A fashion event 'Dar Fashion Festival 2011' is going to be held in Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania. The week-long event, for which the final dates are yet to be decided, will be held with an aim to empower Tanzanian woman entrepreneurs in the fashion industry.

According to Ms. Lucy Kimei, one of the co-founders and organizers of the event, the fashion festival will provide a unique opportunity to those linked to the fashion industry to network and learn.

The series of activities planned for the event include a 'Women Empowered in Business Summit' (WEBS), 'Women's Worth' – an evening for networking, and 'DFF shopping'.

The DFF shopping event, expected to attract more than 1,000 local visitors, will serve as a platform for promotion of business and to drive sales.

A considerable number of women in Tanzania are involved in the fashion retail business, but not all of them make profit and some of them even stop operating after a short interval of loss-making, according to Ms. Tina Lasway, another co-founder and organizer of the event.

Limited business acumen as well as lack of innovation and unavailability of tailored credit facilities, along with costly marketing and advertising services deters the performance of the women entrepreneurs.

The DFF event to be organized by the Dar Fashion Festival Company will go a long way in helping the Tanzanian fashion business to grow and mature. The event will provide buyers with an opportunity to select from a wide range of local fashion retailers, all under one roof.
