The Association of Fashion Designers and Tailors in Senegal (CCAS) is opposing a government proposal to facilitate creation of a Chinese textile factory in Diamniadio town near capital Dakar. CCAS regional coordinator Talla Mbow has alleged that the Chinese have been counterfeiting their designs and the plant will ruin the future of its members.
Mbow cautioned that President Macky Sall’s plan to set up the plant, reportedly to create 1,500 to 3,000 jobs, will result in millions of Senegalese ending up on the street, according to an African news agency report. Representatives of the Senegalese textile industry have criticised the attitude of officials of the ministry of vocational training, apprenticeship and handicrafts, who expelled them from a series of meetings organized to discuss the setting up of the Chinese factory. (DS)
