Retailer DOUGLAS sales up 5.7% to 2.42bn EUR

One of Europe's leading retailers DOUGLAS HOLDING AG increased its sales – based on provisional figures – by 5.7 percent to 2.42 billion EUR during its 2004/2005 financial year (October 1, 2004 – September 30, 2005), In a continuing unfavorable economic environment. Adjusted for Christ Switzerland – which was divested during the previous year – this represents a rise of 8.5 percent.

Perfumeries: Douglas cements market leadership in Europe
The 872 Douglas perfumeries have sustained their international growth and further extended their market-leading position in Europe. Their sales grew by 4.7 percent to 1.37 billion EUR during the October 1, 2004 - September 30, 2005 period.

In Germany, the 416 Douglas perfumeries posted sales of 804 million EUR for a rise of 1.3 percent. As a result, Douglas secured renewed market shares and further consolidated its leadership of the German market. Innovations to the product range contributed towards this improvement.

The 456 perfumeries outside Germany increased their sales by 9.9 percent to 565 million EUR during the period. Their share of total perfumery sales has now climbed to 41.3 percent (2003/2004: 39.3%).

Sales in Germany were 23.9 percent higher at 332 million EUR. As a consequence, Thalia secured additional market share and once again outperformed the segment average. The bookshops acquired from Bouvier/Gonski in July 2004 and the bookstores in the Kober-Löffler Group – in which Thalia has held the majority interest since September 30, 2004 – both contributed towards this positive performance.
