Man-made fibre manufacturers in India literally facing rough weather as cotton gobbles up its market share. Demand for MMF remains thin giving other market segments including spinners and weavers, testing time.

Following sharp decline in exports of synthetic fibres and textiles in 2005, India's biggest consumer of synthetic filament yarns recently witnessed grounding of operations in Surat, the main propduction centre of synthetics in India.

Composite man-made fibre production in September dropped 13.5 percent from previous year level to 77,080 tons, reflecting the strongest one-month drop of the season. From April to September, increasing production shrank 9.4 percent to 474,930 tons.

With monthly production down 17.4 percent at 16,800 tons, most remarkable reduction was seen in viscose staple during September. Production of polyester staple fiber dropped 12.7 percent to 50,560 tons.

Output of acrylic staple reduced by 11.5 percent to 9,460 tons. However, with the expansion of 8.7 percent to 250 tons, polypropylene staple is the only sector, which registered growth in production.
