European Union will start imposing import duties on some leather shoes from China and Vietnam next month; the decision is taken in a bid to stop footwear products from being sold below cost in the Union's markets.

The EU, which imported 120 million pairs of shoes from Vietnam and 95 million pairs from China last year, would impose duties to a maximum of almost 20 percent of their value for next six months, an EU spokesman informed.

China's clothing and textile exports grew 21 percent to $115 billion last year, local media informed, citing customs data.

Vietnam's footwear exports increased 7 percent in January to $300 million in comparison to last year, with the EU as the major export destination.
