Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) revealed that the leather and leather product exports rose this year to reach Rs10500 crore.

Leather product exports accounted for only 25 percent of the total revenue, while the rest was earned from exports of raw hides and other tannery products.

Exports from the leather and tannery industry in the country had recorded an annual increase of 5-10 percent.

Dr D Chandramouli, Head, CLRI's IDLS-PIU Tannery Moderisation Scheme, said that the government had introduced a Rs290 crore Integrated Development of Leather Sector Scheme (IDLS) since November, to encourage and modernize leather industry with latest technologies.

Both, small-scale industry (SSI) and others, will be provided funds upto 20-30 percent of the total cost of upgrading their units, subject to a highest level at Rs50 lakh.
