Govt to inject Rs 290cr in plan for leather sector

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) announced to unleash an Rs 290 crore plan for integrated enhancement of the leather industry during the 10th Plan period.
After the meeting lead by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a spokesperson informed that the plan would lead to technology up-gradation and rejuvenation of existing factories for footwear, components and leather products.
The leather industry holds an important position in the Indian economy in a point of view of its significant export earnings, employment budding and expansion.
The leather sector creates employment about 2.5 million people, major form the weaker sections and minorities that include nearly 30 percent of women.
