A student design featuring CORDURA brand fabric won the judges over at the recent American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) 2009 Materials Design Competition. The winning team at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, received the $1,000 first prize for their “Temp-A-Tote: Solving the Dilemma of Storing Portable Electronics in Automobiles.” The tote, designed to help protect valuable items from harsh conditions, featured an electronics bag made with durable 500-denier CORDURA Classic fabric.

“Our team was very excited to present a unique and practical product to the AATCC,” said Elizabeth Hathaway, a member of the winning team. “We feel the materials used helped make a winning combination to protect valuable electronic items. Moreover, the use of CORDURA brand fabric was essential to extend the life of our product.”

The Temp-A-Tote features 500 denier nylon CORDURA Classic fabric in combination with a phase-change material to protect items from extreme heat and cold that can potentially damage portable electronics. The phase-change material adapts to changes in temperature by changing from solid to liquid and vice versa, thus absorbing harmful heat or damaging cold.

“We are very excited and honored to have CORDURA fabric featured in the award-winning design”,” said Cindy McNaull, global CORDURA brand manager. “This classic CORDURA fabric style has been in our line-up for over thirty years and has once again proven to be at the forefront of durable and innovative products.”

The AATCC's fourth annual competition was designed to promote innovative product development from a material structures design perspective and featured undergraduate and graduate student teams from around the country. Entries were judged on a range of criteria, including concept originality, technical feasibility and efficacy of the proposed commercialization of the idea.
