She said the Economic Development Ministry and the Industrial and Commerce Ministry of Sri Lanka would soon initiate steps for strengthening the handloom industry in the village, which is home to several handloom textile producers.

The Attorney shared the information during a ceremony held to distribute handlooms and other tools to 122 textile producers who underwent skill upgradation training at the Handloom Textile Design Development and Services Centre at Ihala Madampella. The beneficiaries include 65 producers who underwent training in the first phase, and 57 in the second phase.
Terming the programme to be successful, Ms. Rajapaksa said the programme was started on advice of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa to bolster the handloom industry by acquainting low-income producers about newer designs and technology and helping them explore new markets.

She informed that her organization renovated a wrecked premise at Ihala Madampalle with the help of the Economic Development Ministry to accommodate the Handloom Textile Design Development and Services Centre for imparting training to traditional handloom textile workers to produce high-value textiles.
