The Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC) released a Handloom Atlas of India, which contains data on the handloom industry in the country along with cartographic representations. The Atlas which has been compiled in four languages; English, French, Japanese and German, is also accompanied by a CD.
The Handloom Atlas was released by the Union Textile Minister, Mr Shankersinh Vaghela and the Minster of State for Textiles, Mr EVKS Elangovan. The Textile Minister also announced that the government would shortly announce a loan waiver for the handloom weavers to the tune of Rs 26 billion.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Elangovan said that since the handloom sector was highly unorganized, it was plagued by a variety of problems, which included availability of timely credit, technology up-gradation and marketing support. The Director of Textiles in the Govt of Tamil Nadu, Ms Jaya said that the Atlas has a commercial orientation and in times of slowdown will help India attract more markets.
