Tremendous opportunities prevail for prospering the 'sunrise' technical textiles arena in India and China, according to Dr Ramkumar Sehshadri, Asst Professor The Institute of Environmental & Human Health, Texas Tech University, USA.

Addressing a symposium on 'Technical Textiles: Opportunities and Potential,” Ram as he is fondly called, announced, “World markets for wipes stands at US $6 billion, whereas Asia's share of this stands between $578 million to $1 billion.

Illustrating this in his inimitable style, Dr Ram made light of the technically heavy and multidimensional subject with all conviction, and in the most entertaining and engaging fashion that even students and erudite audience present alike, could grasp easily.

He said there was a stupendous demand for value added products in textiles, and if India is to achieve its targeted world exports market share at $80 billion by 2010, it had no other option but to join the technical textiles bandwagon, and make headway.

Considered an international authority on the subject, Dr Ram who holds two US Patents, explained this relatively new technology scoring brownie points to drive home the idea that Indian textile industry really needs to pick on this cost effective and value-add technology that will effectively cater to its rising middle and disposable income group which currently hovers around 300 million.

The technology that he and his team at Texas invented immediately caught the attention of the US Defence and the US Government that recognised its importance in chemical and biological warfare that led to the project being awarded cash grant for research at Texas University, itself.
