PONTEX strenghtens handloom industry of Pondicherry

Pondicherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy informed that to enable sales of handloom clothes in Union Territory, the Pondicherry Co-operative Apex Society (PONTEX) will start a mobile unit.
After opening a handloom fair, he stated that turnover of PONTEX in financial year 2005-06 was Rs14.72 crore. Output of Rs15.80 crore was anticipated for 2006-07.
Union Territory has at least 5,000 handloom weavers. Government has given them the task of preparing lungis, towels, sarees and blouses which are distributed under welfare schemes, to secure steady employment for weavers.
