Technical textiles promoted by ministerial committee

Committee of ministers formed for promoting technical textiles has proposed a regulatory framework for the sector.

Technical textile industry is expected to expand business in local market from current Rs19,130 crores to Rs29,579 crores by 2008.

A senior official of textile ministry informed that a report on use of geo-synthetics in infrastructure projects, fire retardant textiles and use of non-woven disposables in medical centers will be submitted to the committee.

He added that as per the framework, system of inspection would be initiated to ascertain that implementing agencies follow new rules.

He also said that a Research and Development center will be established to operate as accredition agency as per Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) after which a beneficial fiscal model will be launched to favour industrial growth.

India is a chief importer of technical textiles as it covers only one percent of global market. Its production is only $1.9 billion as against local demand of $6.7 billion.

International market for the sector was $93 billion in 2000, and it is anticipated to rise to $127 billion by 2010.

Technical textiles contribute 25 percent of world's fibres and about 40 percent of textiles in developed nations.
