Lankan textile major Brandix to set up garment city in South

Sri Lanka based Brandix is planning to set up a garment city at Achutapuram in Visakhapatnam, South India with plans to start construction work by the next fiscal.
They have employed a team from a reputed Indian consultancy firm Infrastructure Leasing and Finance Services (IL&FS), to study the project viability.
IL&FS has already submitted its preliminary report on their studies and one more final study is on cards.
Brandix has signed a MOU (Memorandum Of Understanding) with the state government to set up a garment city with the disbursement of more than Rs 500 crore in the proposed AP Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) at Achutapuram where the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) has allotted 1000 acres of land for the project.
Eswara Rao, zonal manager, APIIC, informed that the government has started work on a sub-station and water supply system for the proposed project.
Initially, Brandix will be handed over 300-400 acres of land, and later, considering their expansion plans, will be allotted be further alloted additional up to 1000 acres.
Brandix has tied up with the US-based Brandot International for realising the project that will begin with the establishment of a cotton-spinning unit.
The company will then setup readymade garment manufacturing, dyeing, spinning, fabric, zip, button, packaging and other units.
Direct employment to 20000 skilled workers is envisaged under this project while other 60000 workers will be added on completion of the project.
Recognizing the potential, the government has started workshops to train about one lakh women in fashion technology.
District Rural Development Agency, Integrated Tribal Development Agency and the Municipal Corporation of Visakhapatnam have all been enlisted under the project.
