Garments from Palestine on way to UK after five years

The first lot of 2,000 pieces, mainly woolen apparels, has been dispatched recently from the Palestine territory of the Gaza Strip to the UK after a gap of nearly five years.

The export of garments from Gaza Strip was made possible after Israel allowed the truck carrying the shipment to pass through its territory of Kerem Shalom as well as the use of an Israeli seaport.

Sir Vincent Fean, the British Consul General in Jerusalem, welcomed the first batch of export of clothing from Gaza Strip to the UK since 2007.

The garments have been exported by Ashour Company, a knitwear manufacturer in Gaza, for sale in an UK outlet.

Ashour is one of the 340 companies that have benefited from the support provided by the UK over the last four years. Under its Palestinian Facility for New Market Development (FNMD), UK has helped these companies rebuild manufacturing facilities and expand their businesses, creating more than 1,600 jobs in the process.

Alan Duncan MP, the Minister for International Development, said he hoped that a stage would soon be reached where sustained exports from Gaza will become the norm.
