DGTR under the ministry of commerce and industry had conducted the sunset review investigation concerning imports of jute products originating in or exported from Bangladesh and Nepal. Jute bags (HS code 6305), jute yarn (HS code 5307) and woven fabric of jute (HS code 5310) came under the purview of the investigation.
The authority recommended to continue imposition of the existing anti-dumping duties to remove the possibility of dumping and injury to the domestic industry. Accordingly, definitive anti-dumping duty is recommended for imposition for five years from the date of notification.
Imports of jute products during the last few years explain the need to continue imposing the duty. The imports have already reached $35.592 million in the first eight months of the current year. Jute imports grew during the last five years except in 2020 when they had declined due to the pandemic. India had imported jute products from Bangladesh worth $48.129 million in 2021, $45.541 million in 2020, $51.218 million in 2019, $40.542 million in 2018 and $42.120 million in 2017, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.
