Figures reveal that the cultural symbol of India, the elegant saree is fast ending up into history.

Surat's textile industry that makes up almost 65 percent of the country's total man-made fabric output, report that saree stands second to women's ready-made apparel wear.

Producers explained that saree output, which was over 60 percent of the total women's wear has now been reduced to mere 30 percent.

Surat produces over two crore metres of cloth every day and hence, experts consider it a perfect trend setter and fashion determinant.

Traders believe that rapid urbanization is one of the reason for saree's downfall.

Young women today, have discerning preferences and likes.

Working women specially prioritize convenience and comfort with a presentable elegant look.

Time-consuming costumes like the traditional saree requires attention through out the day is not something that newer generation approves of.

Sarees are not convenient when it comes to traveling and commuting.

Thus, active young women prefer jeans and trousers that are comfortable as well as trendy.

Saree is rapidly becoming a ceremonial or formal attire, preferred on festive days and other special occasions.

However, experts say that this shift from sarees to dresses would benefit the industry, as while sarees require only five metres of cloth, dresses require over six metres on the minimum measure.
